Beetroot Sambar

Beetroot Sambar is healthy and tasty recipe which you can enjoy with rice or dosa.


    Toor dal (washed and cooked with enough water in pressure cooker) :- ½ cup
    Medium onion (sliced) :- 1
    Beet root :- 1
    Potato :- 1
    Tomato :- 1
    Carrot :- 1
    Drum sticks :- 3
    Tamarind (lemon sized)
    Turmeric powder :- ½ tsp
    Chili powder :- ½ tsp
    Fenugreek powder :- 1/3 tsp
    Coriander powder :- 3 tsp
    Mustard seeds :- 1 tsp
    Asafoetida :- 1/3 tsp
    Dry red chili :- 2
    Coriander leaves :- As needed
    Curry leaves :- As needed
    Salt :- To taste
    Oil :- As needed

In a deep bottomed pan, take cooked dal and put the onion and veggies to it.

Pour 1 more cup of water if required and cook covered until the vegetables are cooked. (1 more whistle in a pressure cooker).

Dry roast the coriander powder, fenugreek powder, turmeric powder and chili powder over low heat.

Then combine well with the dal, the tamarind extract and cooked veggies.

Allow this mixture to boil and then mix asafoetida and coriander leaves.

Heat oil in a pan and put mustard seeds in it.

Add 1 tsp of onion and now sauté.

Fry curry leaves and red chili. Then put this in the curry and stir well.

Serve hot.

Serving Suggestions

    Serve hot with steamed rice or idlis.
